In 2016, Tim Sutherland as part of the Towton Battlefield Archaeology Project, with the help of volunteers from the TBS undertook an archaeological survey on a part of what is known as “The Old London Road” at Towton. What is now a bridleway on the edge of the battlefield has been in use as a local highway from at least Medieval times, possibly Roman, and with the local name of “Old London Road” has always been something of a enigma to local historians.
Tim’s report makes interesting reading, containing excerpts of ancient maps and other history as well as the mechanics of a modern archaeological survey. Please click on the link.
